Once upon a time, about...oh, five months ago or so, we started a little forum for Timeshare Consumer Group, hosted on the free server "jconserv". The forum did very well considering that its focus was so narrow (the timeshare industry), and that there are already about four or five other mammoth-sized message boards devoted to the topic. We were pretty pleased with the way it grew, and by November of 2007 our users had published nearly 300 messages. It may not seem like a lot, but again, the majority of it was worth banter from individuals who I doubt would typically venture into a forum to begin with.
Then, jconserv crashed. Without warning, or tact, it just crashed.
I had heard great things about the free host, and figured it would be a good way to grow the forums without sacrificing bandwidth. Well, little did I know it would be sacrificing the entire backlog of messages that our users had published. For the sake of professionalism I'll let my complaints regarding jconserv rest there, but suffice it to say that should they get their hosting service back up, I'd steer clear of them all the same and consider self-hosting options, which are far more reliable.
Hm. The first time I typed "self-hosting" I accidentally typed "ELF-hosting". Christmas is a week away, so I thought I'd point that out.
In any case, the forums are back up by way of this new database! And, for those who miss the old days, or for those looking for info on a topic that hasn't been discussed in the sub-forums above, all of our guests and users can now search roughly 93% of the old TCG forum text in this archive. It was painstakingly restored by running cache searches and then simply re-posting the text, as you'll see. The archives are for reference purposes ONLY, so this is the only area where new posts can be made. Feel free to ask any questions or just reminisce here.
Thanks, and Enjoy! |
