Has anyone ever tried to resell through the company they bought from? My company has offered to do this, as they're also a resale company. However, while it sits on the market I'll still be responsible for fees and everything, and won't be able to use it, so it's not sounding like such a great deal.

It's generally a lousy idea for all the reasons you mentioned. Even if the company -- the name of which you don't mention -- were to actually resell your timeshare it would probably be at a montrously deflated price, since half of the price of most timeshares cover overhead costs anyway (presentations, free weekends, etc). Common scam. Try ebay? Or offer it to an acquaintance you don't particularly like!

Yes, evicpin is right...although in some cases it might be one of only a few options available to timeshare owners. Try to see if reselling in this manner involves a contract with a deadline, etc. Most of them don't, but it would be worth looking into. The worst thing is having to deal with maintenance fees and the like while your timeshare just sits and does nothing.

Actually, I think most timeshare contracts now have a clause that cover this when you buy. "In the event that you resell the property through Company A you are still responsible for fees B, C, D," etc. There might even be a no-guarantees statement in there, wouldn't surprise me one bit.

True, although not ALL vacation rentals are a complete scam. A number of sources talk about how easy it is to sell back through Disney with their timeshare properties, although the convenience there might be due to the fact that it's Disney, so the property actually has a built-in demand.
